Suspected Maoists yesterday threw a bomb at a nature trust office in Kathmandu chaired by Nepal?s controversial Crown Prince Paras. There was only minor damage to the King Mahendra Nature Trust for Con-servation, named after the heir?s grandfather. It could, however, be a symbol of a greater discontent with Nepal?s most unpopular royals. The murky story began unfolding this week when the Nepali media reported King Gyanendera?s government was gifting two rhinos to a zoo in Austria. The news created a furore. Says Laxman Upreti, president of the Federation of Environmental Journalists: ?The rhino is an endangered animal listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species. It means they can be exported only for scientific investigation and that too when there is serious danger to wildlife population. Besides, the present was made in a very un-transparent manner.? Now, there?s trouble abroad too.
