KATHMANDU, Oct 25 - Heavy snowfall in the remote hilly district of Manang has killed over 300 yaks while almost all crops in the area have been completely destroyed.
"All the yaks in Nar village died due to excessive cold," said Sange Tshering Lama, a local, over the telephone. Lama himself lost 20 yaks.
According to him, snowfall was common in the village every year. "But this time, it began early, that too, very heavily this year."
Snowfall that began here on Thursday has adversely affected normal life. The area is totally inaccessible as three to four inch-thick snow has blanketed the area.
Locals were not prepared for the disaster brought about by the early snowfall this year.
Meanwhile, around 400 trekkers heading for Mustang via the Thorang trekking route have been snowed in for the last four days in Tankimanang and Khangsar areas of the district.
Sagdu Gurung, a local hotelier of Tilicho base camp, said over the telephone, that some trekkers have been preparing to return as it is almost impossible to proceed due to continuous blizzard.
Former minister Palten Gurung said the disaster was the second of its kind in the last three years. Twenty-five persons had lost their lives in an avalanche at Bagarchhap and Tankimanang three years ago.
